House Extension, Derbyshire Dales
A small project that nevertheless packs in a lot with regard to craftsmanship, articulation of space and different materials, and contextual design. Very much a forerunner to the Derbyshire Dales New House, this project - again in a Derbyshire village conservation area - creates a "wrap" in limestone rubblework, which due to the pronounced change of level on the site rises with a fortress-like batter out of the hillside on the rear elevation. Between this and the original house, an oak framed glazed and oak weather-boarded facade provides a light and airy interior with great views. The extension provides an additional staircase, a lower ground study, a living room, and a new bedroom with en-suite. The oak frame features traditional dowled joints, and the interplay between this and the planar glazing and cladding elements with the structural frame is carefully composed.
