Past Projects

Presented here are a selection of past projects, which illustrate previous experience and my development as an architect.

The early domestic work illustrates an engagement with the fundamentals of the craft of architecture - it is an exciting thing after training to see designs that you have worked on finally made real, and to engage in that process.

The public building projects required working in large multidisciplinary teams, and within the more detached world of Design & Build procurement - both of which were at turns rewarding and challenging. To achieve design quality always requires commitment. In terms of their relevance to smaller scale work, they also exhibit an attention to detail which is applicable to any project: the spatial experience of the planning, the textures of materials, constructional detailing, the touchable tactile building elements – like balustrades, stairs, the position of a window, a place to put your cuppa… These are the things that humanise a building, that make it friendly.

The academic research project was a vehicle for deep investigation of the retrofit field, and experimentation with computer simulation as a design tool - which was something very much in the domain of the engineers in my practice experience. The intention with this project was that it would establish a methodology that could be taken into architectural practice - which is something developed further in the Penistone retrofit project (see Current Work).
